An Argument for Martial Law in Iraq
Bing West at Slate argues that the Iraqi police have not been able to control the insurgents backed by the Sunni clerics in Ramadi and Fallujah. Therefore, "[t]he Iraqi government should declare martial law in many Sunni cities, place the police under the army, and insist on ID cards for every military-aged male. These steps will hasten the withdrawal of American forces under militarily prudent circumstances." Is he right? Would this work? He doesn't seem to be a fan of "winning the hearts and minds"...at least not until the insurgent leadership is decapitated.
